VOICED : Johannesburgs Market Theatre turns 40

The Market Theatre in Johannesburg, established shortly after the Soweto uprising in 1976, was a pioneering institution where black and white people collaborated during apartheid. Founded by Barney Simon and others, it overcame financial and spatial challenges to become a hub for freedom of expression and dialogue. Despite censorship, it grew in popularity, breaking societal barriers and offering a platform for untold South African stories. Today, it has a global reach while remaining rooted in Johannesburg, continuing to nurture young talent and ideas, and maintaining its vibrant and dynamic presence.
