Alabama Executes Inmate After U.S. Supreme Court Denies Stay

In 2005, Woods was convicted of capital murder as an accomplice in the deaths of three Birmingham police officers. Despite efforts by his family, lawyers, and supporters to halt his execution, citing incompetent defense and claims of innocence, the US Supreme Court denied his appeal. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey allowed the execution to proceed, making Woods the first person executed in Alabama that year. The execution date for his codefendant has not been set.
