Elizabeth I observed the religious tensions between her Catholic sister Mary and the Protestant influences around her. Mary's marriage to Philip of Spain and the subsequent Wyatt's Rebellion led to Elizabeth's imprisonment in the Tower of London. Despite suspicions, Elizabeth was released and eventually returned to court. Mary I's false pregnancies and eventual death in 1558 paved the way for Elizabeth to become Queen of England at 25.
