Chilean activists protested in Santiago for women's abortion rights as the Constitutional Court is yet to decide on a law decriminalizing therapeutic abortion, recently approved by Congress. The law allows abortion if the woman's life is at risk, in cases of rape, or if the fetus is non-viable. This marks a historic return of rights lost during the military dictatorship. However, conservative legislators have challenged the law, citing constitutional rights to life. Annually, Chile records about 30,000 abortions, with clandestine procedures estimated at 160,000.
