The official investigation into the MH17 crash in Ukraine on July 17, 2014, concluded that the plane was shot down by a Russian missile, killing 298 people. The missile, identified as a Buk surface-to-air missile, exploded near the left side of the cockpit. The Russian manufacturer of Buk missiles disputed these findings after 15 months of investigation. The crash occurred near Grabov, in rebel-controlled eastern Ukraine, during a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. The report has further strained relations between Russia and the West, amid ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Syria.
