VOICED : Rio militares asumen seguridad de favelas de Mare

The Brazilian Armed Forces have taken over security in 15 favelas of the Maré complex in Rio de Janeiro, deploying 2,700 troops ahead of the World Cup. This area, near the international airport, is a strategic point controlled by rival drug gangs. The police initially occupied the favelas without resistance and have now transferred control to the military. During the week-long occupation, there were 36 confrontations, resulting in 16 deaths, 8 injuries, and 118 arrests. The operations also seized weapons and drugs. Residents have mixed feelings about the military presence, with some seeing it as temporary until the World Cup. Since 2008, authorities have occupied numerous favelas and established police units to maintain security.
