In the colonies, women took charge of their households and opposed the British tea tax by serving coffee. A Boston merchant's overcharging for coffee led to a protest where women demanded his warehouse keys. When he refused, they forcibly took the keys, loaded the coffee, and left, while men watched in silence. This event became known as the Boston Coffee Party.
