The army and navy have begun occupying dangerous favelas in Rio de Janeiro to ensure security during the upcoming municipal elections. Around 3,000 personnel are involved in the operation, focusing on areas like Muquiso, Guadalupe, and the Complexo de Amaré. The goal is to support the Regional Electoral Tribunal and ensure a peaceful democratic process. The navy will patrol 17 favelas still under narcotrafficker control, while the army will be in militia-controlled western neighborhoods. The mission is to safeguard the electoral process and protect officials, with additional military reinforcements deployed in seven other cities in the state.
