In 2020, global deforestation increased by 12%, as reported by Global Forest Watch. This led to the destruction of 4.2 million hectares of primary tropical forests, resulting in over 2.5 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions. South American countries, particularly Brazil, were significantly impacted, with Brazil alone accounting for a third of the forest loss. The Amazon and Pantanal regions are at risk of becoming savannas due to deforestation and fires. Overall, 12.2 million hectares of forests were lost globally, primarily due to agriculture and climate-related fires. Forests cover over 30% of the Earth's surface and are home to a majority of terrestrial species.
