On Friday, Chile experienced another day of violent protests against the private pension system established in the 1980s. The protests began with barricades and the burning of municipal buses. Demonstrators gathered in Santiago's Plaza de Armas and marched to the government headquarters. The pension system, failing to deliver promised benefits, leaves retirees with pensions below the minimum wage. Established during the dictatorship, the system is seen as exploitative. Nationwide, 30 marches involved 15,000 in Santiago and 60,000 elsewhere. The national strike demands a new pension system. Police reported 87 arrests and seven injured officers.
