Job number 534, delayed by the depression, was completed and named by Queen Mary in 1936. It embarked on its maiden voyage, painted gray and equipped for service. During World War II, it served as the fastest and largest transport ship, carrying troops, prisoners, brides, and their children. It set a record for the most people aboard a ship. After the war, it returned to service for elite vacationers until air travel dominated, leading to its sale to Long Beach. Now a popular tourist destination, some believe the Queen Mary is haunted by those who died on board.
