VOICED : In Iraq an ancient board game is making a comeback

Kurdish artist Houshmand Morphe has revived the ancient Royal Game of Ur, a game that originated in what is now Iraq around 5000 years ago. The game, which was rediscovered in 1922, is being reintroduced to modern Iraqis by Morphe and British archaeologist Ashley Barlow. The game, similar to backgammon, involves racing pieces to the end of the board. It was once believed to be influenced by the gods and played for money or alcohol. Today, efforts are underway to spread the game across Iraq, fostering a connection to the country's ancient past.
