Edith Galt: The First Lady Who Took Control

Edith Wilson, wife of President Woodrow Wilson, took on many presidential duties after his stroke in 1919. Coming from a humble background, she married a wealthy jeweler and later became part of Washington's elite. During WWI, she engaged in charitable work. After Wilson's stroke, she acted as his proxy, managing presidential responsibilities until the end of his term. The 25th Amendment later ensured that such a role would be assumed by the Vice President.
