Nylon, one of the first synthetic fibers, was developed in 1935 by mixing two liquids derived from crude oil. It forms a solid that can be spun into long, thin fibers. By the 1940s, nylon became extremely popular, especially for women's stockings, leading to high demand and even competition among consumers.
