CDC Finds U.S. Life Expectancy Is Up For First Time In Years

In 2018, US life expectancy increased by one month, largely due to a decrease in drug overdose and cancer deaths. While heroin and prescription painkiller overdoses declined, fentanyl, cocaine, and meth overdoses rose. Efforts by states and municipalities contributed to these changes. Cancer rates fell by 2%, partly because of reduced smoking and improved lung cancer treatments. However, deaths from flu, pneumonia, and suicide increased.
