VOICED : Juegos Olimpicos carcelarios

In the Penitenciaría General de Venezuela, inmates participated in the first Juegos Deportivos por la Libertad, involving 3,200 athletes, representing 6% of the prison population. This unprecedented event aimed to provide inmates with opportunities in culture, education, and sports, promoting a violence-free environment. The games were organized through negotiations between the government, inmates, and former prisoners, like baseball player Huguet Urbina. Despite challenges, the event sought to reduce violence and humanize overcrowded prisons, where 591 inmates died in 2012 due to violence.
