Americans tour Europe in Airstream trailers

An American caravan of 42 trailers reaches Hamburg, Germany, marking the first mass expedition of American trailers in Europe. Led by Wally Byam, a retired engineer, the caravan includes 126 people from various age groups, mostly retired couples. The six-month, 14,000-mile journey costs each family about $5,000 and is non-profit. Participants, who are not permanent trailer dwellers, plan to visit nearby towns at night and have found Europeans to be welcoming and supportive of trailer travel.
