Simulation of the Dynamics of a Fire in a Two-Story Duplex

In 1999, a fire in a duplex resulted in the deaths of three children and three firefighters. NIST, in collaboration with NIOSH, conducted a detailed analysis using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) and Smoke View to understand the fire's progression. The fire began in the kitchen and rapidly spread, leading to a flashover. Despite the quick response from emergency services, the fire's intensity trapped the firefighters. The simulation provided insights into the fire's dynamics, highlighting the critical moments and conditions that led to the tragedy.
