Banana plants, often mistaken for trees, are actually large herbs. Unlike trees, they lack wood, which is a tough plant tissue containing lignin. Instead, banana plants have a pseudo stem made of compacted leaf tissue. The tallest species, Musa engines, can grow up to 15 meters. Despite their size, banana plants die back after fruiting, but new shoots called suckers ensure their regrowth. Interestingly, the bananas we eat are mutant varieties, and their future is uncertain.
