Deserts are areas receiving less than 250 L of rain per square meter annually. They form in four main regions: subtropical, orographic shadow, cold ocean currents, and polar regions. Subtropical deserts like the Sahara form due to dry air from the equator. Orographic shadow deserts, such as the Gobi, are created by mountain rain shadows. Cold ocean currents lead to deserts like the Atacama in Chile. Polar deserts, like Antarctica, form due to low solar heat. Despite their differences, all deserts share dryness as a common trait.
