American women's contribution to the war effort during WWI: factory work, arms industry, Red Cross nurses and the 'Yeoma

During World War I, women stepped into roles traditionally held by men, filling gaps in the industrial labor force. They also served as nurses in the Red Cross and as yeomanettes in the Navy. By 1917, their significant contributions to the war effort were widely recognized.
