High winds and rain hit Northern Britain

A severe storm hit Scotland's West Coast, bringing some of the strongest winds ever recorded in the country. A peak wind speed of 164 miles per hour was measured at the summit of Cairngorm mountain. The storm caused significant damage inland, including a tree falling through a roof in the village of Gifford, East Lothian, illustrating the widespread impact of the winds.
