Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant Officially Shuts Down

Three Mile Island, site of the worst US commercial nuclear accident, is shutting down. Exelon Corporation announced the closure due to financial losses and lack of state subsidies. Despite being a clean energy source, state laws did not support its operation. The plant, which opened in 1974 and suffered a partial meltdown in 1979, will now be dismantled, a process costing over $1 billion and taking decades.
