Canadian swimmer Marilyn Bell swims Lake Ontario in Canada

Marilyn Bell, a 16-year-old Toronto high school student, became the first person to swim across Lake Ontario. Starting with Florence Chadwick, who had to quit after 15 miles, Marilyn continued through cold waters and challenging conditions. Her journey was closely followed by the Canadian press, turning it into a major national story. Despite the swim extending to 40 miles due to currents, Marilyn completed it in 21 hours, receiving a warm reception and significant rewards in Canada.
