The sedition charge was central to Puigdemont's prosecution and the 13-year sentence of his former vice president, Oriol Junqueras. The Penal Code reform, passed before Christmas, sparked controversy among opposition parties and within the ruling socialist party, who viewed it as a dangerous concession to pro-independence parliamentary allies.
