In 1537, a rebellion led by Sir Francis Bigod erupted in Northwest England. The Duke of Norfolk quickly suppressed it, but the king was enraged, labeling the rebels as traitors. Swift retribution followed, with many rebels executed, including monks and a woman, the wife of Sir John Balmer. With the rebellion quashed, the path was clear for further actions against larger abbeys and monasteries.
