Some migrants have applied for asylum but await responses. A week earlier, a similar evacuation occurred at the Saint-Denis canal, involving migrants from Eritrea and South Sudan. In 2017, France received a record 100,000 asylum requests, granting refugee status to 30,000 while expelling nearly 15,000.
