The Colombian Defense Minister described a major operation against illegal mining linked to FARC, resulting in 59 arrests, including foreigners. Over 600 personnel participated, reaching remote areas in Guainía. The operation uncovered numerous illegal mining sites extracting tungsten, gold, diamonds, and emeralds. It disrupted FARC's finances by an estimated $8 million monthly. Despite legal mining contributing 2.3% to Colombia's GDP in 2012, over half of mining sites are illegal.
