France has culled 10 million poultry to control an unprecedented avian flu outbreak in the west. The virus, first detected in the north in November, spread to 1,000 farms, with half the animals culled in the Loire region. Historically, outbreaks centered in the southwest, affecting foie gras duck farms. In 2021, 500 outbreaks led to 3.5 million animals culled. This year, 34 European countries were affected, with Italy culling 18 million animals.
