In 2016, HIV/AIDS claimed one million lives, marking a 50% reduction in deaths since 2005, as reported by the UN. This progress is largely due to the widespread use of antiretroviral treatments, which now reach over half of the infected population globally. Although new HIV infections are decreasing, the rate is still too slow to halt the epidemic, with 1.8 million new cases reported last year. The UN aims to reduce new infections to 550,000 by 2020. Since the early 1980s, over 76 million people have contracted HIV, and 35 million have died, equivalent to the population of Canada.
