Wilson Borja, a survivor of a paramilitary attack in Colombia, is protected by the National Protection Unit (UNP), which safeguards 7,500 people at a daily cost of $600,000. Established in 2011, the UNP aims to protect those at extreme risk, including human rights defenders, unionists, politicians, and conflict victims. The UNP is optimistic about reducing its protection duties by over 90% within 10 years if Colombia resolves issues with guerrillas, criminal gangs, and drug trafficking.
