Iraq is a geopolitically complex country in Western Asia, bordered by several nations and possessing vast oil reserves. The country has faced political instability since the 2003 US-led invasion, exacerbated by the rise of ISIS. Geographically, Iraq is divided into the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the Zagros Mountains, and the Syrian desert, each with distinct characteristics. The climate is mostly arid, with hot summers and cooler winters, especially in the mountainous regions.
