The Jonestown massacre involved the mass suicide of over 900 members of the Peoples Temple, led by Jim Jones. Despite lacking religious training, Jones founded a church in the 1950s, later moving to California and affiliating with the Disciples of Christ. The church, though claiming humanitarian aims, was marked by coercion and abuse. In 1977, Jones relocated his followers to Jonestown, Guyana. Congressman Leo Ryan's 1978 visit to investigate abuse allegations ended in his murder. Jones then ordered a mass suicide, resulting in 918 deaths, including many children. Few survived the tragedy.
