Multiple monarch butterfly populations likely will become extinct by 2080, officials warn

The monarch butterfly population has declined by about 80%, prompting the Fish and Wildlife Service to propose listing it as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. The probability of extinction for eastern monarchs is nearly 75%, with western populations facing an even higher risk. Public comments on the proposal are open until March 12th of next year, after which a decision will be made.
