Search launched after Amelia Earhart goes missing during 1937 round-the-world flight attempt

Kinney and Noonan disappeared while heading for Howland Island. Their last radio report indicated they were out of gas and needed to ditch. Despite a massive search operation by the United States, involving the battleship Colorado, carrier Lexington, and Coast Guard cutter Itasca, they were not found.
