The study failed, but years later, it was discovered that their DNA was used without consent for unrelated research. This led to a lawsuit, resulting in a $700,000 settlement and the ceremonial burial of their blood. This case marked the first successful payout for DNA misuse in U.S. history, highlighting the importance of ethical research practices.
