The vote counting was slow, with only regional results being released. Projections indicated that the new congress would consist of eight parties, none securing more than 10% of the votes. Acción Popular emerged as the leading party, while the fundamentalist evangelical group FREPAP made a surprising return to parliament. The Fujimorismo party, Fuerza Popular, experienced its worst electoral performance since 2001.
