Pilgrims Return To Mecca As Saudi Eases COVID-19 Restrictions

Saudi Arabia is easing COVID-19 restrictions, allowing 6,000 people daily for the Umrah pilgrimage, which was suspended in March. Initially, only Saudi citizens and residents can participate, with strict safety measures in place. The Grand Mosque is being sterilized multiple times a day. The Hajj pilgrimage was downsized in July to prevent a super spreader event. Despite early measures, Saudi Arabia has recorded over 336,000 COVID-19 cases. The second phase of easing will start on October 18th, increasing the number of pilgrims and allowing international travelers by November 1st.
