Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have developed functioning human mini livers using human skin cells, which were reverted to a stem cell state. These induced pluripotent stem cells were then differentiated into liver cells using chemicals and hormones. The lab-grown livers were transplanted into immunosuppressed mice to test their functionality.
