One Day When I Was Young | POEM

A young narrator prepares for a fancy dress show by dressing up as their mom. At the show, they observe other children and the woman in charge trying to make them laugh. When it's the narrator's turn, everyone laughs at them, which they initially think is a compliment but later realize is mockery. After the show, a boy questions their choice of costume, leading to a conversation with their mom about fame and Waxworks. The narrator feels they should have won for not laughing.
