Comet Hale-Bopp, formally designated C/1995-O1, was discovered in 1995 by astronomers Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp. It originated from beyond Neptune, likely from the Oort Cloud, and has a long elliptical orbit. Hale-Bopp was one of the brightest comets of the 20th century, visible to the naked eye for 18 months. It may have had a near collision with Jupiter in 2215 BC. The comet is notable for its three types of tails: dust, ion, and a rare sodium tail. Its nucleus is estimated to be 30-40 kilometers across, and it was the first comet where the noble gas argon was detected.
