Memphis police use excessive force and discriminate against Black people, Justice Department finds

A press conference revealed that the City of Memphis and its police department are responsible for multiple civil rights violations. The investigation found that Memphis police use excessive force, unlawfully stop and search individuals, and have discriminatory policies against Black people and those with behavioral health disabilities. Concerns were raised about the unnecessary escalation of encounters with vulnerable community members, including children. The investigation was initiated after the fatal beating of Tyree Nichols during a 2023 traffic stop. City officials are expected to release a statement soon.
