In the UK, it is now possible to have a healthy child even if one parent has a serious hereditary disease, thanks to the legalization of in vitro conception with three-parent DNA. This historic decision allows mitochondrial replacement therapy, offering families with severe mitochondrial diseases the chance to have genetically related healthy children. However, the technique must be applied cautiously, as it raises ethical concerns about designer babies. The process involves adding 0.1% healthy mitochondrial DNA from a donor woman. Approximately 2,473 women in the UK are at risk of passing on potentially lethal mitochondrial diseases. Newcastle University is preparing to implement this technique for about 25 women annually with public funding.
