In May 1798, the French campaign set sail from Toulon, capturing Malta and Crete to mislead the British fleet. By July 1798, they reached Alexandria, where they faced strong resistance led by Mohamed Karim. Despite this, the French successfully occupied Alexandria, marking the start of their occupation of Egypt. The campaign then clashed with the Mamluks at Shubra Khit and Imbaba, resulting in the Mamluks' defeat and retreat to Upper Egypt, allowing the French to enter Cairo.
