In prisoner exchange at end of Korean War, US POW Army General William F. Dean arrives in Panmunjom, North Korea

Major General William F. Dean, the UN's highest-ranking prisoner, was liberated at Panmunjom during Operation Big Switch. After three years, he saw Americans again and received the Order of Taeguk from President Syngman Rhee. In Tokyo, Dean reassured families of POWs that he tried to answer their letters, despite not obtaining information on other POWs. He expressed hope that families received good news through Panmunjom.
