Ecuador was sanctioned due to the Bayron Castillo case but will still participate in the World Cup. The Tribunal Arbitral del Deporte (ETAS) decided to deduct three points from Ecuador in the next South American World Cup qualifiers and imposed a fine. Peru and Chile had reported Castillo's alleged ineligibility due to his Colombian birth, but FIFA's initial dismissal of their appeal was overturned by ETAS. Despite a false passport, Castillo was deemed eligible based on Ecuadorian legislation. Ecuador finished fourth in the qualifiers, while Peru and Chile were fifth and seventh, respectively. Ecuador will play the World Cup opener against Qatar and is in Group A with the Netherlands and Senegal.
