The 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to John Woodenough, Stanley Whittingham, and Akira Yoshino for inventing lithium batteries. These batteries are lightweight, rechargeable, and powerful, used in devices from phones to electric vehicles. They enable significant storage of solar and wind energy, promoting a fossil fuel-free society. Whittingham initiated the search for non-fossil energy sources in the 1970s, creating an innovative lithium battery cathode. Woodenough improved it by using metal oxide, and Yoshino developed the first commercial battery in 1985. Woodenough, at 97, is the oldest Nobel laureate.
