Millard Fillmore: Last of the Whigs (1850 - 1853)

Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States, was an accidental president who ascended to the role after Zachary Taylor's death. His presidency is noted for the Compromise of 1850, which included the controversial Fugitive Slave Act. Fillmore's political career began in New York, where he served in the assembly and House of Representatives. Despite his efforts, he was often seen as a weak leader, contributing to the decline of the Whig Party. After his presidency, he joined the Know Nothing Party and remained politically active during the Civil War and Reconstruction. Fillmore's legacy is largely overshadowed by his mediocrity and the divisive issues of his time.
