Xu Xian, a young herbalist, faces a crisis when his former employer sells him rotten herbs. During a plague, his wife Bai Su Zhen uses her knowledge to create a remedy, saving the city. A monk, Fa Hai, warns Xu Xian that Bai Su Zhen is a demon. Xu Xian tests her with realgar wine, revealing her true form as a white serpent. Shocked, Xu Xian dies, but Bai Su Zhen, an immortal snake, seeks an herb to revive him. She risks her life to obtain it, driven by their karmic connection. The Old Man of the South Pole allows her to take the herb, and she revives Xu Xian, who accepts her despite her true nature.
