Researchers from the University of Kansas, funded by NSF, have successfully tested a radar-equipped Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) in West Antarctica. This marks the first successful sounding of glacial ice using UAS-based radar. The UAS, weighing 85 pounds, offers a range of 62 miles and is a promising tool for mapping remote and dangerous areas. Previously, such mapping required manned aircraft. The research aims to improve predictive models of ice sheets and sea level rise. The team plans to further miniaturize radar technology and deploy the system in Greenland within two years.
